This morning 14 Oct at 5am, on a report from Watch The Med - Alarm Phone, our ship Mare Jonio completed the rescue of 58 people in mortal danger, in international waters in the Tunisian SAR zone.
They were on board a small overcrowded boat at imminent risk of shipwreck, fleeing Libya. With engine failure, they had been adrift for 22 hours, without water or food.
Tried by the violence they suffered in Libya and the long stay at sea, they are now safe on board the Mare Jonio, cared for by our Medical Team.
We immediately requested a safe port of disembarkation from the Italian authorities.
