Mediterranea was born in 2018 from the refusal to accept thousands of deaths in the Mediterranean sea. When European governments began criminalizing sea rescue, individuals and organizations came together to launch the Mare Jonio – the first and only civil rescue vessel flying the Italian flag.

Our mission goes beyond sea rescue. In the Central Mediterranean, we save lives and document violations of international law. On land, we support refugees on the Balkan Route, provide aid in Ukraine, and are active in the Palestinian territories, where we monitor the situation on the ground and support the local population.
