Learn more about the story of Mediterranea Berlin

Our story

Mediterranea Berlin e.V. is a non-profit organization founded in 2020 that operates on the internal and external borders of Europe, on land and in the Mediterranean region.
We are active in migration, politics and human rights and stand for freedom of movement.

Through our political activity and humanitarian missions in the Mediterranean, Bosnia and Ukraine, we support migrants and asylum seekers and fight together with international refugee movements against the discriminatory EU migration and border policies.

Registered association (e.V.)

Legally speaking, Mediterranea Berlin is a registered association (eingetragener Verein), founded in 2020 in Berlin.

Our statutes ensure participation, a stable democratic structure, and transparency for the organization.

The Board

The board represents the association internally and externally.The board of an association calls meetings and assemblies, works out the procedure and topics of the general assembly in advance and also chairs them. In addition, it presents business reports and observes the implementation of members' resolutions.




Silvia Decina

Silvia Decina, born in Rome on 31.01.1980. Silvia holds a degree in Chemistry and works as a Client Relationship Manager in a German company in Berlin. Since 2020, she has been a member of Mediterranea Saving Humans and founded the association Mediterranea Berlin eV. She established the Med Report group in June 2021, responsible for planning, writing, and validating reports. Silvia coordinates the group's work, manages meetings, training, and fosters autonomy in activities. She organizes training seminars to engage new volunteers in communication projects.

Silvia Gentili

Silvia Gentili, was born in Città della Pieve on 03.04.1985. She holds a degree in Geology and a PhD in Crystallography. She lives in Berlin since 2015 and works as a software test engineer, for a German company focused on dental medicine. Since 2022 Silvia has been an activist of Mediterranea Berlin e.V. and she coordinated the creation of the Merchandise TaskForce and still manages its activities together with Giuseppe Minervini. She actively participates in most of the fundraising and communication activities for Mediterranea Berlin e.V.

Serena Manno

Serena Manno was born in Palermo, Italy in 1984 and graduated from Bologna University with a degree in comparative literature and postcolonial studies. She became naturalized in Germany after having lived and worked in Berlin for ten years. Member of Mediterranea Saving Humans since 2020, she is also co-founder and board member of Mediterranea Berlin e.V. She is mainly involved in co-organizing political initiatives, as well as informational and educational seminars and awareness raising events.

Giuseppe Minervini

Giuseppe Minervini was born in 1983 in Puglia. Visual artist and idealist, primarily active on painting and illustrated storytelling, he is fascinated by human beings, stories and cultures, as well as people's relationship with their own identities and the barriers imposed by authorities. This makes him naturally sensitive to the topics of freedom of movement and the human reasons to migrate. In 2022, he joins Mediterranea Saving Humans by creating illustrations for the fundraising activities and merchandising of the Berlin crew, of which he becomes an active member, even taking part in an aid supply mission to Ukraine.

Tiziano Schiena

Tiziano Schiena, born on 18.04.1984, has a degree in Political Science & International Relationships. He is among the founders and treasurer of Mediterranea Berlin eV., a Board Member of Mediterranea Saving Humans, and a member of the communication team. Tiziano is dedicated to the struggle of Refugees in Libya, a transnational self-organized movement born in October 2021, active in Tripoli claiming their right to be evacuated to safe lands, actively involved in planning political and fundraising activities and organizing events within the transnational self-organized movement in Tripoli.

Assembly

The assembly takes place once a year. The balance sheet for the next year is submitted for approval and initiatives / projects for the next year are proposed and planned.

Biweekly meeting

We meet twice a month online or in person in our office situated at the Mehringhof, to discuss the recent political developments, debrief the work of the last weeks as well as the ongoing initiatives and thus plan the next projects.
